The Science Behind Skin Pigment Support
Vitamin D
According to Abraham DJ. et al., 2007, vitamin D is linked to various chemical activities at cellular level which may lead to repigmentation of white patches of skin caused by vitiligo. Moreover, in a cross-sectional study by Zainab M. et al., 2021, it has been observed that subjects with vitiligo had lower levels of serum vitamin D as compared to the control group.
A 2013 study claims that high doses of Vitamin D intake in patients with vitiligo helps resolve pigmentation. 16 vitiligo subjects when given vitamin D up to 35000 I.U daily for six months, coupled with dietary calcium and dairy restriction, produced promising results.
B Complex Vitamins
A 1997 study examined the effects of folic acid and vitamin B12 in vitiligo patients for 2 years. Repigmentation was clearly seen in 52 subjects which was more pronounced in the sun-exposed areas. 6 patients experienced total repigmentation, whereas the spread of the disease had come to a halt in 64% of subjects.
The findings are further established by the fact that vitiligo patients have low serum levels of vitamin B12 as compared to healthy subjects Maha A. et al., 2021.
Zinc and Copper
Zinc is a trace element and an integral part of several metabolic pathways in the body. Being an antioxidant and an antiapoptotic, the element saves melanocytes from undergoing cellular death. Zinc also plays a significant role in melanogenesis (Nooshin B. et al., 2011).
Zahra K. et al., 2022 measured serum copper and zinc levels of vitiligo patients and compared that to those of healthy subjects. It was found that both elements are significantly lower in vitiligo patients. Hence, copper supplementation has a great role in supporting skin health in those with vitiligo.
Ginkgo biloba
This plant native to China carries antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. D. Parsad et al., 2003 in his study mentions that daily supplementation of Ginkgo biloba in patients with vitiligo results in cessation of progression of the disease.
Polypodium leucotomos
Extracts of this tropical fern have shown promising effects in the treatment of skin pigmentation disorders. The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of America.
Oral forms of polypodium leucotomos when added as an adjunct to psoralens, ultraviolet A and narrowband ultraviolet B for treatment of vitiligo have demonstrated significant improvements (M. Nestor et al., 2014).
